VC501 – Design Manifesto: Reality

Today there is more emphasis on well-being, nature and a greener world. Eventually I think people will become less material and they will become more content with their lives. People will grow immume to consumerism, and all the science that goes with it. I think the economic situation is helping society to change and become less material and more happy, if people genuinely can’t afford to buy something, then they can’t afford it – it doesn’t matter if they feel they need it, want it, that it will make them happier etc. And after time they realise that actually buying a new car etc wouldn’t have made them anymore happier. Ultimately mass consumption needs to be discouraged, and people should be happy with the basics in life, afterall, that is where true happiness lies.

Advertising will change, and will become more creative. Because of the freedom post-consummerism would bring, advertising would open up to a whole other world. Ads could be simple, products could be simple, there would be no fear of hitting targets in the boardroom. Imagine a world without self, it would be bliss. This change will come, it will have to, if society doesn’t change, then the future looks bleak.
